MASKNE – how can you prevent the new pandemic skin disease?

Pandemic is a difficult time for all of us. Unfortunately, not only for us, but also for our skin. Previously, we used to apply a mask to our face while making a home spa in the evening, but now we also have to contend with the problem of fabric masks that restrict breathing and are designed to protect us from the spread of viruses.

Mostly wearing masks for many hours does not leave our skin in good condition, causes flare-ups, abrasions, skin changes in the form of eczema. Under the mask, an “environment” is created that causes irritation, inflammation, and changes in the facial skin.

MASKNE is the new disease of pandemic times. This is a variant of mechanical acne, associated with dysbiosis in the microbiome. Defined by dermatologists as “the occurrence of acne within 6 weeks of starting regular use of the protective mask or an increase in lesions at the site where the mask is worn.”

The name comes from the English words “mask – mask” and “acne – acne”. Lesions appear in areas where masks are worn, i.e. Mandible, chin, nose, mouth area. What harms, what helps, and what causes masks?

There are many reasons for skin changes as a result of wearing masks. People who work in masks and have previously struggled with skin problems are particularly susceptible to the disease. The reasons by which the skin lesions, recently declared a new MASNE, are formed include:

  1. MATERIAL OF THE MASK

Very often masks are made of artificial materials, preventing breathing and causing many changes on the skin. It’s best to choose disposable masks, and when you have to wear them longer, change them often. If you prefer reusable masks, wash them often, in appropriate, gentle, non-allergenic liquids.

  1. HEAT AND MOISTURE

Under the mask creates the perfect environment for skin lesions to form, bacteria and yeast love the warm and moist climate. Through breathing, the mask becomes moist, the lack of free access to oxygen creates a high temperature inside.

  1. TARING

The mask should be pressed tightly against the nose and mouth for proper function. The material of the product rubs against the skin as you speak, causing chafing and chafing, resulting in skin lesions.

How to prevent the formation of lesions?

You can’t do anything about the obligation to wear masks, you can’t be responsible for pandemics, but you can do everything you can to make sure your facial skin doesn’t suffer during this time.

  1. Wear a mask only when it is mandatory. While on a walk, surrounded by loved ones, being at a distance or walking alone – take it off, let yourself and your skin breathe.
  2. Remember to change your mask regularly. Disposable masks absorb moisture very quickly. If you must wear a mask for a long time, change them as often as possible.
  3. If you wear a reusable mask, be sure to wash it at high temperatures and iron it. Proper preparation, “burning off” the germs and bacteria is very important so that you do not continue to transfer them to your facial skin.
  4. Choose reusable masks with good composition, preferably 100 percent cotton. A good material will not irritate your skin or cause changes.
  5. Make sure to cleanse your face properly, right after you get home.
  6. Remember, being systematic and maintaining proper hygiene will help you deal with your skin problems.
  7. Try to touch your skin as little as possible; hands are often dirty.

What about makeup under the mask?

Opinions are divided. Dermatologists do not recommend applying makeup to your face before putting on a protective mask. This contributes to skin lesions and increases clogging of pores. The skin does not “breathe” under the mask, and having a clogging product on it makes this task even more difficult. Try to apply light makeup, use foundations that are light in their formula and non-comedogenic. If you need to do makeup under your mask, do it well in advance of putting on the mask. Dust the foundation lightly, which will allow less makeup to rub off under the material. oil, when you get home, make sure to remove your makeup as soon as possible and cleanse your face properly.

MASKNE is not an incurable disease….

Remember that the skin during this period needs special care. Stress does not help with imperfections, it increases cortisol secretion and can also cause lesions. Regular cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising is very important. Pay attention to regular oral hygiene as well; dental problems can combine with imperfections arising in the lower face. Change your disposable masks often and keep your reusable ones fresh. Whenever you can, breathe and let your skin breathe, without a mask. And when you are at home – take off the protective mask and apply a skin care, give your skin a rest.
